You know when a couple has real chemistry. You can see it in the way they look at each other, the way they laugh together and the little moments between them. For a wedding photographer, it makes the job an absolute breeze.

With Caitlin and Rowan, nothing needed to be forced or staged. Their connection was completely natural, which meant I could simply step back, let them be themselves and capture the moments as they happened.

The Tithe Barn at The Kingfisher in Bedfordshire is a superb wedding venue. This wonderful old building has been lovingly restored and maintained, sitting in a beautiful riverside setting on the banks of the Great Ouse.

It is the kind of venue that provides a stunning backdrop without needing much embellishment. The historic character of the Tithe Barn, combined with the river and surrounding Bedfordshire countryside, gives couples plenty of opportunities for beautiful and natural wedding photography.

Caitlin and Rowan chose an autumnal rustic theme for their wedding, which worked perfectly with the setting. The rich greens, reds and yellows of the surrounding countryside provided a beautiful seasonal backdrop and complemented the character of the venue perfectly.

Natural and relaxed wedding photography

One of the things I love about documentary wedding photography is that sometimes the best photographs happen when you don’t really do anything at all.

With such a beautiful backdrop as the River Great Ouse, my job was simply to find the right spot, position Caitlin and Rowan somewhere within the scene and then allow them to just be together.

There was no need for elaborate posing or complicated instructions. They could talk, laugh, look at each other and enjoy being together while I photographed the moments in between.

And sometimes, it really is as easy as that.

When a couple is completely comfortable with each other, those genuine moments of affection and laughter become the photographs that tell the story of their wedding day.

A wedding photographer who lets you be you

I don’t believe wedding photography should take over your day. For me, it’s about being there, watching what happens and recognising the moments worth photographing.

Of course, there are times when a little direction is useful, particularly when it comes to making the most of beautiful locations and light. But once the couple is comfortable, I prefer to step back and let the photographs happen naturally.

Caitlin and Rowan made that particularly easy.

Their chemistry, the autumn colours, the historic Tithe Barn and the beautiful riverside setting all came together to create a wonderful collection of relaxed, natural wedding photographs.

Sometimes, as a wedding photographer, all you really need to do is stand back, admire and click away.
